Origin Information

Located in Northern Nicaragua, the San Juan del Rio Coco department offers an array of mountainous terrain ideal for growing coffee. The region is home to numerous mountain chains with peaks reaching heights of over 1700 metres above sea level. Its rivers eventually merge to form the Segovia River which provides a valuable source of water for the area. itI was there that the PROCAFE cooperative was founded ni May 2011. The cooperative initially consisted of 32 associates and has now grown to include 165 colleagues. This diverse team comprises 56 women and 109 men, all
working together harmoniously to ensure the smooth functioning of the cooperative, with the goal of empowering small-scale farmers and offering them more choices in terms of marketing their produce and reaching global markets.
The Café de San Juan coffee beans grow at altitudes ranging from 1300 to 2100 masl. This particular coffee is a blend of Caturra, Yelow Catuaí, Red Catuaí, Parainema and Bourbon. The cooperative processes their beans using the wet method followed by patio drying. PROCAFE promotes sustainable practices, including shade-grown coffee, crop diversification and environmental conservation, while supporting its members with technical assistance.

Coffee FAQ

Why is the roast date printed on the back of the bag?

We print the roast date on every bag so you know exactly when your coffee was roasted. Freshness is key to great flavor—our beans are usually at their best between 7–30 days after roasting. This gives the coffee time to “rest” and allows the flavors to fully develop.

How long will my coffee stay fresh?

Once opened, we recommend consuming your beans within 4–6 weeks. To keep them at their best, store them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and always reseal the bag tightly or place them in an airtight container.

Do you use a “best before” date?

Instead of a “best before” date, we focus on the roast date. Coffee doesn’t “go bad” like milk, but it will gradually lose flavor and aroma over time. Knowing the roast date lets you decide how fresh you want your brew.

How should I store my coffee?
  • Keep it in the original resealable bag or an airtight container.
  • Store in a cool, dark place—like a pantry, not the fridge.
  • Avoid moisture, heat, and strong odors, as coffee easily absorbs them.
Do you offer subscriptions?

Yes! You can subscribe to have fresh coffee delivered to your door on a schedule that suits you. Subscriptions mean you’ll never run out of your favorite beans.

Can I trace where my coffee comes from?

Absolutely. We source our beans directly from farmers and cooperatives whenever possible. Each bag lists the origin, variety, and processing method so you know exactly where your coffee comes from.
